So, I just bought a car (a new VW!) but now I’m wondering, is this my “midlife crisis” era?
The classic version is easy to picture - a bright red sports car and wild choices. But let’s be real. Most of us aren't about to drop cash on something that flashy. Sometimes the crisis is just a restless feeling nobody else notices.
It doesn’t always cost money, but it can mess with how connected we feel to the people who matter most.
Our Quiet Reality
Usually, a midlife crisis isn’t loud. Instead, it’s that quiet itch to change something. The restless energy. The “should I switch things up?” feeling.
I’ve felt it recently. Nothing dramatic, but enough to make me think. Should I ignore this feeling? Or do I lean in and wrestle it?
Go Kick Rocks
This reminds me of a weird quirk I have. Whenever I go for a walk with my wife, I hunt for the perfect ‘kickable’ rock. I try to kick it as many times in a row before it bounces into the curb or takes off sideways. Side note: My record is nine kicks! Not too bad, right?
But no matter how smooth I kick, the rock eventually goes rogue. That’s what pushing away the midlife itch feels like. Sooner or later, things go off track.
So, instead of endless kicking, maybe it’s time to pick up the rock and have a look.
Embracing Midlife
Maybe you find yourself in a similar place? You're not on the verge of a new sport's car, but you are ready to wrestle with those restless feelings. If that's you, let's take a moment to dig in and figure things out.
Here's a 2-step exercise to help us turn the struggle into an opportunity.
Step 1: A Look Back “Your Highlight Reel”
Think back over the last 10, 15, 20 years. What moments made you proud, excited, or totally yourself? Maybe it’s nailing a project at work, helping a friend, or teaching your kid to ride a bike.
Write down five things that come to mind. These don't have to be "big" achievements. Instead, focus on what moments made you feel most alive.
Step 2: A Look Ahead “Your Dream Day”
Now jump forward. What would a fun, fulfilling day in your future look like? What’s your morning routine? Who’s hanging out with you? What kind of work, if any, makes you feel satisfied at the end of the day?
Jot down what pops into your head. Don’t stress if it seems out of reach, this isn’t a checklist, just a peek at what really excites you.
Crisis Averted?
The classic “midlife crisis” makes a lot of noise, but the quiet version can be just as dangerous.
So… Will you keep kicking the rock and hope for the best, or pick it up and decide where you want to go next?
Until next time, keep chasing ✌
